Net walls
Gross wall area is 2 × (length + width) × wall height. Standard doors deduct 20 sq ft each, windows deduct 15 sq ft each, and you can add custom opening area for arches or built-ins.
Interior planning / Room groups
Plan a whole interior one room group at a time. Add bedrooms, living spaces, kitchens, and baths, then see how net walls, optional ceilings, trim, materials, and labor build the project total.
This is a multi-room planner, not a duplicate of the general Paint Cost Calculator. Separate rooms when dimensions or quantities differ.
For siding and outdoor walls, use the Exterior Paint Cost Calculator.
Planning estimate only. Product coverage, local prices, wall condition, prep, and contractor scope can change the final cost.
How the number works
The model adds room groups instead of treating the house as one generic box. It keeps net walls, ceilings, baseboards and door faces, primer, paint, and labor visible.
Gallon rounding happens after all room groups are added. Material dollars use the shared product prices; labor uses the total paintable surface.
Room-level benchmarks
Use these Angi ranges as a sense check beside your measured estimate. They are planning references, not quotes, and the scope behind a contractor price can vary.
| Room type | 2026 U.S. professional range | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | $300–$750 | Size, prep, and trim scope matter. |
| Living room | $900–$2,000 | Often has more wall area and detail. |
| Kitchen | $300–$750 | Cabinet and repair scope can change it. |
| Bathroom | $200–$400 | Moisture prep and small-room minimums vary. |

A simple sense check
Three bedrooms plus a living room, kitchen, and bathroom adds up to a broad professional planning range before halls, repair work, and other scope.
This is a sum of room-type benchmarks, not a house quote. It excludes halls and significant repairs or prep.
How the illustration sums: 3 × bedroom ($300–$750) + living room ($900–$2,000) + kitchen ($300–$750) + bathroom ($200–$400) = $2,300–$5,400. This is a sum of room-type benchmarks, not a house quote; it excludes halls and significant repairs or prep, and all figures vary by location and scope.
Read the estimate correctly
Interior projects get easier to price when surfaces are named clearly. The calculator keeps these pieces separate so you can adjust scope without losing the thread.
Gross wall area is 2 × (length + width) × wall height. Standard doors deduct 20 sq ft each, windows deduct 15 sq ft each, and you can add custom opening area for arches or built-ins.
Ceilings are optional. When selected, the model adds each room’s length × width to paintable surface and to paint and primer gallons.
Trim is a separate surface. The model estimates baseboard area from perimeter minus door openings, then adds 40 sq ft per door for both faces.
Primer is calculated with its own coats, coverage, and price. Use it for new drywall, stains, glossy surfaces, porous repairs, or a strong color change.
Paint gallons are calculated from the selected coverage and coats, then rounded up to whole containers after all room groups are combined.
DIY labor is $0. Professional labor multiplies the combined paintable surface by your rate; real bids may add prep, masking, moving, travel, or minimum charges.
Every room group currently uses the same coverage and prices. Create separate groups for different dimensions, but remember to treat materially different finishes or colors as separate planning runs.
Worked examples
Both examples use 8-ft walls, one door, two windows, two coats, and 350 sq ft of coverage per gallon. They show why a room group is more useful than a single generic room assumption.
10 × 12 bedroom / one room
Walls: 2 × (10 + 12) × 8 = 352 sq ft. One door and two windows deduct 50 sq ft, leaving 302 sq ft of net walls. Two coats need 1.73 gallons at 350 sq ft per gallon, so plan to buy 2 gallons. With paint at $42 per gallon, the basic wall-paint material line is $84 before optional ceiling, primer, trim, or labor.
12 × 16 living room / one room
Walls: 2 × (12 + 16) × 8 = 448 sq ft. One door and two windows deduct 50 sq ft, leaving 398 sq ft of net walls. Two coats need 2.27 gallons at the same coverage, so plan to buy 3 gallons. At $42 per gallon, the basic wall-paint material line is $126 before optional ceiling, primer, trim, or labor.
Before you buy
The general calculator is for one room or one simple scope. This page repeats room groups, quantities, and room-level estimates so a homeowner can plan a multi-room interior without averaging unlike spaces together.
Not yet. All room groups currently share coverage and product prices. Separate a group when dimensions or quantities differ, and run separate saved estimates when colors or finishes use different products.
Paint and primer are commonly planned in whole-gallon containers. The model adds the room groups first, divides by coverage, then rounds each product total up so the shopping plan does not come up short. Actual quart or 5-gallon combinations may be more economical.
No. The calculator’s labor line is a transparent square-foot planning rate. Contractor bids may include repairs, sanding, caulking, masking, furniture moving, access, travel, and minimum charges. Angi room benchmarks are also planning references, not quotes.
Yes. Save stores the numeric room groups in this browser with no account. Share uses your device’s Web Share sheet when available and otherwise copies a short summary. Print / PDF opens the browser print dialog with the project totals and room breakdown.
